Kamil Hilbert

Kamil Hilbert (born January 12, 1869 in Laun ( Louny ), † June 25, 1933 in Prague ) was a Czech architect. His most important work is the reconstruction and completion of the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague between 1899 and 1929.

Life

Hilbert was the son of the painter Karolína Hilbert-Reifová and the older brother of Jaroslav Hilbert . He attended the Higher Trade School in Pilsen and then studied between 1891 and 1895 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Max Fleischer . Hilbert was shaped by his training with Prof. Lunze from Vienna and developed into an expert in historical architectural styles. His work includes the restoration of numerous historical church monuments.

In 1899 Josef Mocker entrusted him with the construction management for the work on Vitus Cathedral, which was to become his life's work.

  • Little Church of the Mother of God in the Prague suburb of Louny (1913)
  • Church of St. Aegidien in Nymburk (1913–1914)
  • St. Bartholomew Cathedral in Pilsen (1914–1920)
  • Basilica of St. Prokopius in Třebíč , completed after his death in 1934
  • Baptistery and Church of St. Remigius in Prague-Čakovice (1904–1905)
  • Church of St. John of Nepomuk in Štěchovice (1910-1919)

Hilbert built the villa “U sedmi havranů” (At the Seven Ravens) for the sculptor Josef Šejnost on Křemešník , which is reminiscent of a Gothic castle and is also known as Větrný zámek (Wind Castle).
