The Kamishima class ( Japanese 神 島 型 敷設 艇 , Kamishima-gata Fusetsutei ) was a class of miners in the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II .

General

The Awashima in 1947.

At the end of 1944, in anticipation of the Allied landing on the main Japanese islands , the Imperial Japanese Navy was faced with the need to block access to the Sea of Japan ( streets of La-Pérouse , Tsugaru and Tsushima ) with minefields . However, since the majority of their miners had already been lost, a program to build multiple units for this task was started. Nine construction contracts for a simplified draft of the Sokuten-class mine layers were awarded at the end of 1944, but only two boats were keeled at the naval shipyard in Sasebo by February 20, 1945. The orders for the other seven were canceled in May. Of the two units under construction, only the Kamishima could be completed by the end of the war and put into service on July 30, 1945. The second boat was 90% complete at the time of the Japanese surrender .

After the end of the war, both boats carried out repatriation trips until June 1947, the Awashima was completed and put into use on April 18, 1946 . Then they were awarded on October 1, 1947, one boat each, to the Soviet Union and the USA as spoils of war .
