Living Rivers campaign

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The “Living Rivers” campaign was launched by the German Environmental Aid (DUH) and campaigns nationwide to ensure that rivers and streams become natural landscapes again. The aim is to network the activities of various nature conservation associations ( BUND , NABU , DUH and regional associations) and institutions in the large catchment areas of the Oder , Elbe , Rhine , Neckar , Danube and Werra - Weser rivers .

Lively floodplain on a branch of the Oder

activities

The nature conservation associations advocate river renaturation and the creation of new flood plains .

In order to carry out practical measures to protect rivers and streams, i. d. Usually different local actors come together: fishing associations, water sports associations, all authorities involved, shipping and other users.

Practical activities of the local working groups are often the renaturation of individual river sections. For this purpose, flow inhibitors are often used in twisted sections of streams. By installing stones and wood, the flow speed in the pipes is reduced and fish can swim against the current. This allows them to penetrate the upper reaches of the streams to spawn there . So-called fish ladders at locks and weirs fulfill the same function.

A stronger connection to "own river" is to be created for children and young people through environmental education projects. Environmental educators carry out projects with school classes on the rivers, carry out marine studies and organize guided tours along the waters.

aims

The network "Living Rivers" wants to make the function of rivers and streams as the lifelines of the landscape better known to the public nationwide and to do political lobbying for ecological flood protection . One of the goals is to create the conditions for implementing the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) in Germany and Europe at a high quality level.

River projects

Lively Danube

The Lebendige Donau campaign was founded in 2002. The working group wants to restore the industrialized Danube and its tributaries to a more natural state. The same applies to the tributaries Aitrach, Riß and Ablach, Brigach , Breg , Schmeie, Große Lauter or Blau, Lone, Brenz and Eger (river) , but also to the many other larger and smaller streams and ditches in the catchment area of the Danube. In addition to the renaturation, the AK Lively Danube also suggested the planting of marginal strips along the waters.

Officially, the working group advocates the reduction of wastewater discharges, the restriction of water abstraction and the designation of floodplain areas . Riparian forests , wet meadows and dynamic banks along the German course of the Danube are to be created. In addition to the neighboring municipalities, the Tübingen regional council with its branch in Riedlingen is the most important partner.

Lively Elbe

Elbe flood 2006 in Dresden
The lower course of the Elbe from the North Sea to Hamburg has been continuously deepened from 1818 until today, while important floodplains were destroyed by dykes and buildings.

DUH, the NABU and BUND regional associations along the Elbe and the Hamburg association Rettet die Elbe eV work in the Lebendige Elbe working group . Politically, the stop of the deepening of the Elbe has been in the foreground in the last few years , as has environmental education projects with schools.

Lively Neckar

The Lebendiger Neckar working group was founded on June 14, 1998. In addition to volunteers, the office on the river was created. The office coordinates the Lebendiger Neckar campaign from Wendlingen am Neckar . A team of scientists and engineers carries out various projects and works out feasibility studies that show the potential of the Neckar and its tributaries. In addition, the office on the river also performs planning tasks along the water and works together with the water management administration.

Folk festival events also take place every summer under the name of Lebendiger Neckar .

Lively Werra

The Lebendige Werra campaign has existed since 2000, taking care of the conservation and ecological continuity of the river. Cooperation with the local forest administrations is particularly important, as large sections of the river run through forests.

Lively Weser

Aktion Lebendige Weser eV has its office in Höxter and operates an infomobil, regularly organizes information events and organizes Bach sponsorships. In 2005, the German Environmental Aid founded the office on the river together with the Lippe University of Applied Sciences in Höxter . The aim is to implement individual sections of the renaturation concept for the river and its catchment area.

Lively Rhine - "River of a thousand islands"

From 2003 to 2007, three NABU specialist institutes on the Upper, Middle and Lower Rhine developed and implemented measures for the ecological improvement of exemplary stretches of riverbank using 15 model projects under the direction of the NABU Naturschutzstation eV in Kranenburg . Despite the sustained improvement in water quality, the rigorous expansion into the busiest inland waterway in Europe continues to result in severe impoverishment of the Rhine ecosystem. NABU continues to see a specific need for action here. So far, seven model measures have been implemented through the Lebendiger Rhein - River of Thousand Islands campaign . The bank reinforcement was dismantled in six places and in one place tail units and groynes were converted in an ecologically sensible way.
