The canal (until 2016 Black Canal ) is a queer car park in Berlin . It was laid out in 1991, but had to move into a new area in 2010. Since then, it has been located on Kiefholzstrasse in the Neukölln district .

history

The Black Canal was built in 1991 at Engeldamm 2 on a site at the Schilling Bridge in the immediate vicinity of the Köpi housing project and cultural center, which is also autonomous . In 2002, the new Verdi federal headquarters was built on the area . The residents therefore accepted an offer from the Hochtief construction company in September 2002 and moved to a wasteland on the banks of the Spree in Michaelkirchstrasse. A usage license agreement secured the use of 3500 square meters until March 2005. The neighboring office property management company and the German Architecture Center sued against this use due to alleged depreciation shortly after the move. In October and January the lawsuit against Hochtief was granted by the Administrative and Higher Administrative Court . The residents of the Black Canal cleared part of the property at the end of April. On May 9, 2005, some of the Wagenburglers briefly occupied a wasteland in Friedrichshainer Richard-Sorge-Strasse to draw attention to their situation. The litigation lasted until 2007.

Hochtief acquired the property on which the Black Canal was located until the end of March 2010 from the Federal Real Estate Agency . The sale took place with the condition of development until 2010, so the contract with the Black Canal was terminated on December 31, 2009.

At the end of October 2009, days of action under the motto “Queer & Rebel” were organized at various car parking spaces to draw attention to the location of the Black Canal. A demonstration by around 600 people on October 24, 2009 was particularly impressive. An empty school site in Adalbertstrasse was occupied for a weekend. The school premises belonged to the Berliner Liegenschaftsfonds, which manages, sells and auctioned former municipal properties. The occupation led to the fact that for the first time the property fund offered replacement properties. The evacuation threatened by Hochtief in January 2010 could be delayed until March 2010. The Black Canal left the old square on Michaelkirchstrasse and moved to a replacement site at 74 Kiefholzstrasse in Neukölln.

The construction company has now been able to erect the planned administrative building for the employees of its Berlin subsidiaries on the property in Berlin-Mitte .

In February 2016, the Wagenplatz was renamed Kanal and justified this with the fact that the previous name was racist.
