Kanalschwimmer is a documentary about canal swimming in the English Channel . He was awarded the German Television Prize 2005 in the Documentation category.

content

In the film, the director Jörg Adolph deals with the seemingly impossible challenge of swimming the English Channel from Dover to Calais (33 kilometers).

The first successful canal swimmer on the English Channel was the English captain Matthew Webb . As a 27-year-old, he completed the route in August 1875 in a time of 21:45 hours. The American lifeguard Paul Boyton swam through the English Channel as early as May of the same year. However, he wore an air-filled rubber suit and used a paddle during his 23-hour traverse . Matthew Webb was the first person to swim the English Channel without aids. In doing so, he set an unwritten law: All swimmers who swim the English Channel do so without a wetsuit , fins or paddles. The swimmers only wear swimming trunks (or a swimsuit), a swimming cap and swimming goggles .

The film documents the passion that a few people have for swimming this waterway. Among them is the long-distance swimmer Christof Wandratsch . He set himself the goal of undercutting the previous record of 07:17 hours (set in 1994 by the American Chad Hundeby). He was prepared and looked after by a trainer.

Trivia

On August 1, 2005, Wandratsch managed to break the previous record with 7:03 hours.

Since August 24, 2007, however, the record has been held by the Bulgarian Peter Stojtschew, who needed 06: 57.50.
