The Kanonenbahnbrücke in Eschwege (2019)

The Kanonenbahnbrücke is a railway bridge on the Leinefelde – Treysa railway line as part of the Kanonenbahn over the Werra in Eschwege in northern Hesse . It is located immediately north of the city center in the immediate vicinity of the road bridge on Bundesstraße 249 .

history

The bridge was built from 1876 to 1880 as part of the Silberhausen Trennungsbahnhof - Eschwege section , which went into operation on May 15, 1880. The total length of the bridge is 210 meters, it is about 15 meters above the water level of the Werra. The actual Werra bridge is a steel truss bridge without an upper cross bracing in two large superstructures with a length of 31.50 meters each. It is complemented by a 113 meter long and nine meter high flood bridge with seven openings.

The bridge was rebuilt in 1913 and 1914 as the railway line was expanded to two tracks. The original fish-belly girders were replaced by the parallel- chorded lattice girders that have been preserved until today. The second track on the flood bridge was dismantled between 1926 and 1945. On the morning of April 3, 1945 the Werra Bridge was blown up by retreating units of the Wehrmacht . In 1946 it was restored and used again from August 12, 1946.

Due to the nearby border to the Soviet occupation zone and the GDR , the route of the Kanonenbahn was permanently interrupted, the remaining railway connection from Schwebda , Frieda and Wanfried lost importance in the following decades. The railway traffic that was last maintained up to Schwebda station was discontinued on October 1, 1994. At the end of 2014, the structure was exempted from railway operations . There are local efforts to convert the bridge into a pedestrian and cyclist bridge .
