Anamur is a Turkish district town of 1,241 km² and a district in the province of Mersin and is located about 120 kilometers east of Alanya on the Mediterranean coast across from the island of Cyprus , whose mountains can be seen when the weather is nice. The city center is only 76 km away from Cyprus. Since a regional reform in 2014, the district town has been identical in area and population to the district.

The place is known for the ancient city of Anemurion and the castle of Mamure (Turkish Mamure Kalesi ) in its immediate vicinity . Cape Anemurion is located at the southernmost point of Asia Minor and is actually called "windy nose". The freighter Cap Anamur and the aid organization Cap Anamur / German emergency doctors were named after him.

history

The first historical traces of Anamur come from the 8th century BC. In Anemurion , of which impressive ruins can still be seen today, up to 20,000 people are said to have lived. The military buildings were erected southwest of Anamur. From this southern tip of the Turkish Mediterranean coast, the entire shipping was under control. The water supply for the town and castle was certainly an outstanding achievement for the time. The water was dammed about 10 kilometers east of the Dragon River and channeled along the slopes east and west of the delta. Some of these irrigation systems are still used in agriculture today.

Anamur has been under Turkish rule since the 13th century, since the conquest in 1228, first by the Seljuks , then by the Ottomans up to today's Turkey. The Mamure Kalesi near Anamur is one of the oldest and best preserved fortifications on the Turkish south coast.

fauna and Flora

From May to the end of August, the sea turtles of the species Caretta caretta can be found on the sandy beach of Anamur . In 2006 there was the first study on this topic with a surprising result: 30,444 young hawksbill turtles hatched from 674 clutches. In 2007 over a thousand clutches were identified, from which around 45,000 young animals hatched. It is therefore the most important Caretta-Caretta beach in Turkey. In 2008, volunteers took extensive measures to protect more than 800 nests on the beach, but these have not been continued since 2009 due to an aquaculture project .

One of the last retreats for the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is also located here . There are currently 29 animals living in the Anamur area, which is more than half of the total population in Turkey.

Anamur is also known for its bananas, the sweet strawberries in March and the peanuts in September, which are steamed here in a special way. For years a small variety of bananas was grown here in the open air, which was known for its excellent taste. In the meantime, people are moving to greenhouse cultivation and growing larger varieties.

tourism

Anamur is around 250 kilometers from the Antalya and Adana airports and has therefore largely been spared international mass tourism. During the Turkish school holidays, many Turks travel from e.g. B. Ankara or Konya to the south and spend your holidays in the hotels or your own holiday apartments in the İskele district, which is located directly on the sea . For Europeans, it could get very hot in the shade in midsummer with 40 degrees. Ideal travel times for those who like a milder climate would be the months of April to the end of June and / or September to the end of November.

There are 35 villages around Anamur, which, with very few exceptions, have been accessible on asphalt roads since 2006. After a few kilometers you are in the middle of the fascinating world of the Taurus Mountains .
