Chapel in Groß Thondorf

The Evangelical Lutheran chapel in Groß Thondorf in the Lower Saxony district of Uelzen is a small building from the early neo-Gothic period .

location

The chapel is located on the north-western edge of the historic center of Groß Thondorf, directly at a street crossing. Trees border the chapel to the south and west, which they clearly tower above.

history

The first chapel in Groß Thondorf was probably built in the 9th century. A chapel was first mentioned in a document in 1368.

The direct predecessor of today's chapel was built towards the end of the 18th century in half-timbered construction and had to be demolished in 1865 due to its poor condition. In 1865, today's chapel was built in the early neo-Gothic style, making it one of the first neo-Gothic buildings in the Uelzen district.

Renovation work on the chapel took place in 1961 and between 1983 and 1984. In the 1980s, the bell tower and the roof structure were completely renewed.

The chapel in Groß Thondorf today belongs to St. Bartholomäus in Himbergen and the chapel in Weste to the parish of Himbergen in the parish of Uelzen of the Evangelical Lutheran regional church of Hanover , which has been parishally connected to the parish of Römstedt since 2010.

architecture

The chapel is a neo-Gothic hall church made of brick . It has a three-sided choir closure and a roof turret over the western front. The long sides of the chapel each contain two pointed arch windows, whereas the choir is not equipped with windows. The choir and the Chapel ship are with red roof tiles and the roof skylights with slate covered.

The interior is equipped with a wooden barrel ceiling . The choir is separated from the chapel nave by a step. The walls of the interior are painted white.

Furnishing

In the center of the choir is the brick altar . The altarpiece from 1705 shows a canvas painting of the crucifixion of Jesus in the middle. The top is crowned by a gable field with lateral tendrils. The pulpit was made in 1705 and has largely been preserved in its original state. The electronic organ was made by Ahlborn Orgeln and has been in the chapel since the early 2000s.

Peal

The bell in the ridge was cast between 1330 and 1350. This makes it one of the oldest bells in the Uelzen district. It has a diameter of 420 millimeters and the striking note is cis' ''. The bell founder is not known.
