Karabalta ( Kyrgyz Карабалта ; Russian Кара-Балта ), meaning "black ax", is a city in the Kyrgyz region of Chüi .

Geographical location

Karabalta is the administrative center of Jayyl Raion . With around 47,000 inhabitants, it is the area's second largest city after Tokmok . Karabalta is located in the Kyrgyz Mountains near the border with Kazakhstan and 62 kilometers west of the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek . The river of the same name flows through the city .

history

Near Karabalta are the ruins of Shish Debe , the oldest urban settlement in Northern Kyrgyzstan. It was inhabited between the 6th and 12th centuries and is often equated with the city of Nusket . Excavations in the 1960s and 1970s unearthed 8,000 silver and copper coins.

The city was created in 1975 by merging the three settlements Karabalta, Kosh Tegirme and Kalininskoje. The population census of 1979 showed 47,300 inhabitants, the 1999 census showed 47,400 inhabitants. Mostly Kyrgyz and Russians live in Karabalta , as well as smaller groups of Ukrainians and Kazakhs . The German population group almost completely left the region in the 1990s.

The city lives mainly from light industry and the processing of agricultural products. The hydro-metallurgical factory processed uranium during the Soviet Union, which was mined in the nearby mines. Uranium processing was discontinued between 1989 and 1997, and the company has since processed other products. Karabalta is a strategically important point on the Tashkent-Bishkek railway line , here is a base of the Russian military. The Chimik Karabalta football club , a Kyrgyz first division club, is also based in the city.
