Karl-Ernst Sommerfeldt

Karl-Ernst Sommerfeldt (born September 4, 1926 - † December 26, 2015 in Güstrow ) was a German specialist in German studies , language historian, author and university professor.

Life

In the 1950s, Sommerfeldt lived in Erfurt at Kettenstrasse 7 . He was initially a teacher of German and Russian . After several years of professional activity, he received his doctorate in 1964 together with Thea Schippan under Wilhelm Schmidt at the University of Education “Karl Liebknecht” in Potsdam as a “ Dr. phil ”with the dissertation“ Lexical and current meaning of the noun and the adjective ”. In 1968 he completed his habilitation with his thesis "Structure and Performance of the Noun Group in the German Language of the Present" (Erfurt 1968 / Potsdam 1969). Sommerfeldt is one of the first to deal extensively with the prepositional attribute. From his extensive number of scientific publications, the works on noun and adjective valence in the German language are particularly noteworthy. The results resulted in two valence dictionaries that he created together with Herbert Schreiber . The approach should be used as a “functional grammar” as a foundation for school grammar.

From 1971 on, Sommerfeldt taught at the Erfurt University of Education and as head of German studies at the Güstrow University of Education , some of which was to be relocated to the newly founded PH Neubrandenburg in 1988 . The Güstrow University of Education was closed in 1991. Sommerfeldt also continued his scientific work at the University of Zielona Góra .

In the Kulturbund of the GDR he worked as a press spokesman for the state board of the regional association of the Kulturbund of Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania.

The main focus of his academic interest was German lexicons and grammar . He was married to Sibylle Ottens (* 1927); both have a daughter, Petra Ewald , who is also a German studies specialist and university professor.
