The Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences is one of the three state-run universities of applied sciences and supervision of the Ministry of Education of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The academic institution in the west of the city of Neubrandenburg in the immediate vicinity of the Tollensesee was founded in 1991 with two departments and began teaching in the 1991/1992 winter semester with 161 students. It is a campus university with around 2,170 students in 14 courses (winter semester 2013/14).

About a third of the students are enrolled in social work . Other important subjects are agriculture , food technology , health and nursing sciences , education , geomatics , as well as landscape and environmental sciences .

History and Development

Pedagogical University of Neubrandenburg 1989–1991

Shortly before the political change , Neubrandenburg became the location of the last university built in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) by amalgamating several teacher training institutions , including the Institute for Teacher Training founded in Templin in 1955 (in the buildings of the former Joachimsthal Gymnasium ) . The Neubrandenburg district was the only one in the GDR that did not yet have a university. On September 1, 1988, the "Pädagogische Hochschule Neubrandenburg", named after the KPD politician and educator Edwin Hoernle , was founded and opened on October 1, 1989 by Minister of Education, Margot Honecker . However, after reunification it did not last in the existing concept. The teacher training was integrated into the University of Greifswald . The last (second) rector Horst Hartmann was taken over as professor for German studies.

The Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences was re-established with two faculties on October 15, 1991 on the premises of the University of Education and with a large part of its permanent staff. Another predecessor institution was the civil engineering school in neighboring Neustrelitz , which had existed since 1948 and was discontinued when the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences was founded. In accordance with the traditions of the two previous institutions, teaching began in the 1991/1992 winter semester with 161 students studying civil engineering and social affairs. In 1992, with the establishment of the agricultural economics course, the agricultural economics and landscape architecture department was founded . Three years later, the Food Technology department was created. In 1996 the first graduates received their diplomas. In 1998, the newly built laboratory building for the civil engineering and surveying department was inaugurated, and three years later the laboratory building for the agricultural economics and landscape architecture and technology departments. From the year 2000, most of the courses in the individual departments began to be converted to the new Bachelor and Master degrees. The main building and the student residences, which were built around 1988/1989 and thus before the university was founded, were gradually refurbished and modernized between 2000 and 2005. In 2003, the social work and health department was divided into the social work department (currently: social work, education and training) and health and care.

Since September 1, 2005, the name has been "Hochschule Neubrandenburg" with the addition "University of Applied Sciences". In summer 2006 the departments were redistributed. The Agricultural Economics degree from the previously existing Agricultural Economics and Landscape Architecture department was merged with the previous degree programs in the Technology department to form the new Agricultural Economics and Food Science department, while the Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning degree program is now part of the newly created department of Landscape Architecture, Geoinformatics, Geodesy and Civil Engineering (currently: Landscape Sciences and geomatics). The number of departments has thus decreased from five to four. At the same time, the conversion of almost all courses to graduated degrees based on the Bachelor / Master model was completed. As part of the plans of the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to reform the higher education system, the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences handed over the civil engineering, building informatics and structural engineering courses to the Wismar University for the 2010/2011 winter semester . Registration for these courses in Neubrandenburg was last possible in the winter semester 2006/2007. In return, the Department of Health, Nursing and Management in Neubrandenburg has taken over the Management of Social Services course from Wismar.

Location

The campus of the University of Applied Sciences Neubrandenburg is located west of the Neubrandenburg city center and is within walking distance from there. The university has a main building with a cafeteria, two laboratory buildings for the fields of agriculture, geodesy, landscape architecture and technology, which contain, for example, a technical center for experiments in the field of food technology and a laboratory for the sensory analysis of food. In addition to the seminar rooms, the main building (House 1) houses the administration, the university computer center (HRZ), the multimedia center (MMZ) and the foreign language center. The university library is temporarily located opposite the main entrance of the university in rented rooms.

International

The Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences has partner universities in several continents, so far mainly in Europe. However, there are only about ten to 20 international students each semester.

International or binational degree programs include (as of WS 2016/17) the master’s degree programs “Landscape Architecture and Greenspace Management” as well as “Sustainable Agricultural Production Management” and “Sustainable Land Use Management”.
