The Karl Rehbein School ( KRS for short ) is a high school in Hanau with around 1,800 students.
history
Karl Rehbein-school was in 1840 as higher girls' school founded to set up in addition to the private schools to higher education for girls. The Karl Rehbein School was thus part of a comprehensive reform of the urban school system under Hanau's first mayor Bernhard Eberhard . The first headmaster was Dr. Denhard. The current headmaster is Jürgen Scheuermann.
In 1938, 6 schoolgirls took the Abitur examination at the Karl Rehbein School for the first time , and now there are around 100 Abitur graduates per year.
The current building complex of the school was built in 1955. For this purpose, areas were built up that had previously been occupied by the palace gardens and the Hanau city palace , which was demolished after it was damaged in the air raids of the Second World War . The then Lord Mayor of Hanau, Karl Rehbein , after whom the school was later named, vigorously advocated the construction of the school at its current location. The school building is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act.
Due to a lack of space, the Karl Rehbein School also uses the premises of the closed school on Schloßplatz at Schloßplatz 4.

The Karl Rehbein School is characterized by a comprehensive high school offering with special focuses.
- Foreign languages : Annual student exchange programs with Dartford (Great Britain), Lyon (France), La Victoria (Córdoba) (Spain) and Sanmen (China) as well as the DELF language certificate complement foreign language teaching.
- Socio-economic area
- Musical subjects: The large orchestra, the choirs, brass, flute groups and the big band celebrate much-noticed successes both in Hanau and abroad. The numerous concerts and musicals with around 350 participants are an integral part of the overall concept and receive a lot of attention in the region.
- Sports area: The Karl Rehbein School is a sports center, cooperates with the rowing club Hassia, the Hanau gymnastics community and the 1st Hanau tennis and hockey club and provides winning teams for youth trained for the Olympics .
In addition, programs for the promotion of gifted children in the Pfiffikus AG, for social learning (mediation) and participation in the European educational project Comenius highlight the high school's performance.

At the Karl Rehbein School there are a number of other working groups in addition to those mentioned, in which the students can participate voluntarily. These include groups on the subjects of art, Africa, media, photography, astronomy, biology, chemistry, Chinese, GO, hockey, Greek, Internet, Italy, mathematics, physics, rowing, Russian, chess, school newspaper, pottery and the environment. The Karl Rehbein School has had a school medical service since 2000. The school medical service is there to provide extended first aid effectively in emergencies or illnesses in the school.
Support associations
Since 1957 the "Association of Friends of the Karl Rehbein School e. V. ”at the school, which has set itself the goal of supporting the Karl Rehbein School through membership fees and donations and promoting the individual skills and interests of the students. The “Association of Friends of the Gymnasium for Girls” existed as a forerunner from 1929.
