Karl August Weber (English studies)

August Karl Weber (born January 15, 1895 in Essen , † October 7, 1955 in Tübingen ) was a German English student . After a stay in England (1924) he called himself Carl August Weber. The spelling Karl August Weber was also used.

Live and act

After attending school and high school ( war Graduate ) 1914 in Paderborn Karl August made Weber military service and was until 1920 in Russian captivity. From 1920 to 1927 he studied German at the Universities of Cologne and Göttingen . The doctorate took place in 1926 in Göttingen, the state examination in 1927. From 1927 to 1929 Weber was Assistant Lecturer at the German Department of the University of Sheffield , then scientific assistant in Göttingen. In 1935 he completed his habilitation in English philology with Hans Hecht and taught as a private lecturer . From the winter semester 1936/37 he took over the representation of the chair for English language and literature at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and was appointed to this chair in 1938. From 1940 to 1942 he was dean of the philosophy faculty. On July 5, 1945, he was dismissed from teaching as part of the denazification and had to leave Tübingen. He was reinstated as a teacher at the beginning of the winter semester 1949/50.

His successor on the chair was Gerhard Müller-Schwefe (1914-2010).
