Karl Burgener
Karl Burgener (born October 25, 1918 in Zermatt ; † March 28, 1994 in St. Niklaus ) was a Swiss Catholic clergyman , composer , writer , songwriter , choir director and conductor . He was from 1965 to 1993 pastor in St. Niklaus and is one of the major sponsors of the church singing the Upper Valais the 20th century.
Life
Years of apprenticeship
After the classic high school diploma in the college of Brig , which at that time was still under priestly leadership, Karl Burgener entered the seminary of Sion in 1939 . There he received on June 27, 1943 the hands of Bishop Victor Bieler , the ordination . He then continued his musical education with Charles Haenni (1867–1953) in Sion and at the Freiburg Conservatory in Üechtland . He was also the secretary of the Catholic Action from 1944 to 1945 .
Chaplain and pastor
In 1945 Karl Burgener became chaplain in St. Niklaus . In 1960 he took over the parish of Saas-Grund and returned to St. Niklaus as a pastor in 1965. Since 1981 he was also the pastor of Herbriggen . With the golden jubilee of the priesthood in 1993 he took his leave from the parish pastoral care of St. Niklaus and Herbriggen.
Karl Burgener has also devoted himself to pastoral care on a supra-parish level, so he was also field preacher and worker pastor . After all, in 1988 he was one of the co-founders of the Swiss Catholic Church Music Association (SKMV). He was also a member of the board of directors of the association magazine “Catholic Church Music”.
composer
Karl Burgener composed 126 pages of his own music. These include eight masses for church choirs with and without an organ, 70 other choral pieces, two concert pieces, but also marches for brass music such as Gruss an St. Niklaus (1954, SV) and Walliser Zenden-Marsch (1979, Verlag Emil Ruh) and 90 four -, three or two-part folk songs (including the song of the Matterhorn ). The latter have been published in two parts in the 271-page Valais songbook , which was published by the siblings Lea Imboden-Burgener, Pastor Karl Burgener and Pastor German Burgener in 1983 by Rotten Verlag . Some of these songs were also recorded on sound carriers in 1982. All works by Karl Burgener are kept in the State Archives of the Canton of Valais in Sion.
Writer and songwriter
In 1976 Karl Burgener published the book Parish and Church of St. Niklaus . In addition, he worked on the 100-year history of the Upper Valais Cäcilienverband, published in 1991. In addition, he wrote many texts for his compositions in Latin , Standard German and Valais German .
Choirmaster
Karl Burgener founded the mixed church choir in St. Niklaus in 1945. Has worked as a choir director for over 40 years. The first performances of his compositions were given by the church choir in St. Niklaus.
From 1946 to 1979 he was also President of the Visp deanery association, an actuary from 1946 and a board member from 1975. From 1978 to 1992 he was diocesan president of the Upper Valais Cäcilienverband (OCV). As such he was for many years the diocesan representative in the General Cecilia Association of the German-speaking countries.
conductor
In 1963, Karl Burgener was the founder of the "Enzian Music Society" in Saas-Grund . From 1954 to 1960 and from 1966 to 1988 he conducted the "Musikgesellschaft Edelweiss" St. Niklaus VS.
Appreciation
The parish of St. Niklaus made Pastor Karl Burgener an honorary citizen in 1962 . He is considered to be one of the most important patrons of church singing in Upper Valais in the 20th century.
