Karl Eduard Onken

Karl Eduard Onken (born March 12, 1846 in Jever , Oldenburg , † November 15, 1934 in Vienna ) was an Austrian landscape painter and etcher.

Born as the son of the glazier and painter Christian Eduard Onken and his wife Wilhelmine Katharina Mehrtens, Onken received his first painting lessons from his father. Thanks to the scholarship donated by the Grand Duke of Oldenburg, Onken went to Berlin , where Christian Griepenkerl encouraged him to study in Vienna. Onken then studied from 1869 to 1879 with Peithner von Lichtenfels at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna .

Onken received the Rosenbaum Prize in 1871, the Gundel Prize in 1873 and 1875 , and scholarships in 1874 and 1875. From 1874 he went on study trips to Hungary , Italy , Holland , Germany and Switzerland .

In 1880 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus .
