Karl Eduard Pönitz (also Carl Eduard Poenitz ) (born on January 24, 1795 in Döbeln , Kingdom of Saxony ; died on September 27, 1858 in Hosterwitz near Pillnitz ) was a Saxon captain , post office worker and military writer . Pseudonym Pz .

Life

Karl Eduard Pönitz attended the Freemason Institute, a boys' education institution with secondary school, in Dresden. After graduating, he began an apprenticeship in Oschatz . At the beginning of the wars of freedom in May 1813, he volunteered in the Saxon cavalry in Reinhardtsdorf and took part in the campaigns in Saxony, France and the Netherlands. Then he trained in military science. In 1822 he received a position as a fencing master and in April 1825 he was appointed officer, as an assistant professor of military science in the cadet house in Dresden . At this time Pönitz had made some contributions to scientific newspapers and to the "Militair-Conversations-Lexicon". In 1838 his first military science book “Attempt at a guide to tactical instruction for subaltern officers in the infantry and cavalry”, in 1840 “Recognition and description of the terrain” and in 1842 “The railways and their use as a military line of operations”. His only fiction work appeared in 1848 under the title: "The Soldier and His Duties". His main work, the first volume appeared in 1845, "The military letters of a deceased to his still living friends", comprised four volumes and was reissued in 1854 by the Cotta'schen Verlagbuchhandlung .

His last rank was that of a captain . In 1846 he entered civilian service, and on April 1, 1854, he was retired as a senior postmaster in Leipzig . His last work, "Warrior and Peaceful Dreams", was published in 1857 by BG Teubner Verlag . Pönitz died on September 27, 1858 in Hosterwitz near Pillnitz. The "military newspaper" dedicated a necrology to him on the front page.

Karl Eduard Pönitz's books have been translated into Swedish, Dutch and French. Most publications appeared anonymously or under his pseudonym “Pz”. As early as 1842 he devoted himself to the importance of the railroad for future warfare, which he continued in other books.

The librarian and bibliographer Julius Petzholdt put 1859 so far the only scientific bibliography before the works of Karl Eduard Ponitz. He found that Pönitz had only published one work under his name.
