Karl Eugen Mummenhoff (born April 17, 1920 , † May 30, 2005 in Münster ) was a German art historian and monument conservator . Among his colleagues and scientists in his field, he was considered the best expert on Westphalian secular architecture .

Life

Karl Eugen Mummenhoff spent his childhood and school days in Münster, Westphalia, where he graduated from high school in the spring of 1939. This was followed by his call-up to the Reich Labor Service and, from January 1940, military service as an anti-aircraft gunner and master-at-arms in Northern Germany and on the Eastern Front. During his three and a half years as a prisoner of war in a camp near Poitiers , the young man, who was interested in art, acted as a camp interpreter because of his good knowledge of French and was occasionally given leave to study the church buildings in Poitiers.

After his release from captivity and return to Münster, Mummenhoff earned his living from the autumn of 1948 with auxiliary services in the Münster State Museum . At the same time, from the summer of 1949, he studied art history, classical archeology, and prehistory . In the summer of 1956 he was with the dissertation The secular architecture in the upper pin Münster 1450 to 1650 PhD . The writing was groundbreaking, because in contrast to the already well researched and documented sacred architecture of Westphalia, its secular buildings were virtually unexplored and in large parts not even known. It brought Mummenhoff a further education grant from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , which enabled him to study secular architecture in southern Germany from January 1957 to April 1958 at the Central Institute for Art History in Munich. Then he worked again for the State Museum in Münster and cataloged the numerous baroque master builders' drawings in its holdings.

From 1959 onwards, Mummenhoff was employed in the Westphalian Office for the Preservation of Monuments - initially on a contract basis, then as a permanent employee. In 1961 his dissertation was published as the 15th special issue of the Westphalia magazine . From around 1970 he was busy with the inventory of the important and until then still mostly unknown monumental secular buildings in the cities of Westphalia. His expertise led to his being appointed to succeed Hans Thümmler, who died early, in 1972 as head of the inventory department at the Office for Monument Preservation.

From 1968 until his retirement in 1984 Mummenhoff held a teaching position for the history of architecture at the Institute of Art History at the University of Bochum , where he was made an honorary professor in 1972 . In 2000 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . He died a few weeks after his 85th birthday in his hometown of Münster.

Since 1982 he has been on the board of the Friends' Association for the Münster City Museum .
