Karl Friedrich Ludwig von Lediwary

Karl Friedrich Ludwig von Lediwary (* December 1732 in Ragnit ; † October 12, 1812 in Polish Wartenberg ) was a Prussian major general , most recently chief of Hussar Regiment No. 10 and heir to Ottendorf near Polish Wartenberg. He was considered one of the best hussar leaders of his time.

Life

origin

The family is originally from Hungary. His father Anton von Lediwary initially worked in Austria and then switched to Prussian. He came as Rittmeister from the hussar regiment No. 1 and fell on June 6, 1741 near Ulmendorf (Olbersdorf). The unit was able to free some encircled hussars, including Hans Joachim von Zieten . King Friedrich II promised the widow that he would look after the sons. The brother Johann Georg Wilhelm († 1794) became lieutenant colonel and commander of the infantry regiment "Kleist", Karl Friedrich Ludwig joined the cavalry.

Military career

Lediwary came to Berlin on October 20, 1750 as a cadet and was employed on August 19, 1756 as a private corporal in the "Wietersheim" infantry regiment . During the Seven Years' War he took part in the battle of Torgau , as well as in the battles of Reichenbach, Giersdorf and Wartha. During that time he was transferred to the "Schmettau" cuirassier regiment on February 28, 1759 as a cornet . There he became a lieutenant on June 5, 1760. After the war he was transferred to the hussar regiment "Bohlen" on September 20, 1769 as Rittmeister and squadron chief .

He also took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession . On September 6, 1780 he became a major and on June 7, 1789, a lieutenant colonel . On May 31, 1791 he became a colonel and during a review on September 4, 1791 he was also awarded the order Pour le Mérite . When General Georg Ludwig von Dalwig , the commander of the cordon at the Polish-Silesian border, fell ill in 1793, Lediwary was given command on July 18, 1793. On December 29, 1794 he was appointed chief of the hussar regiment "Prinz Eugen von Württemberg" because the prince had left ill. The prince recovered, however, got the regiment back and on January 23, 1797 Lediway received the "Wolky" hussar regiment instead. But Lediwary was seriously ill, and it was not until the summer of 1797 that he visited the regiment in Skierniewice for the first time. On May 23, 1798, he was appointed major general. Due to his illness, he applied for his release on March 8, 1799, but this was refused, the king could not and did not want to do without his general. But he was too sick and received his resignation on October 1, 1799, plus a pension of 1000 thalers, and retired to Polish-Wartenberg. In 1802 he asked for an increase in his pension, but this was refused. He died on October 12, 1812.

Lediwary was married twice. His first wife was Helene Charlotte Countess von Salisch (born June 6, 1733, † October 13, 1797). She was the widow of Colonel von Vippach . After her death, he married on December 16, 1798 in Wazlawek Henriette Karoline von Winterfeld (born April 9, 1765 in Winzig; † April 4, 1835), the only daughter of Colonel Heinrich Bernhard von Winterfeld († 1810).
