Karl Fromherz
Karl Fromherz , also Carl Fromherz , (born December 10, 1797 in Konstanz , † January 27, 1854 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German chemist , mineralogist and physician . He was a pioneer in biomedicine and biochemistry . His research in the field of geology is also known .
Life
After graduating from the Berthold-Gymnasium in Freiburg , Fromherz initially wanted to study law, but later decided on medicine. During his studies he joined the old Freiburg fraternity in 1818 with his brother Johann Nepomuk Fromherz . As early as 1822 he gave lectures on "animal chemistry" as a private lecturer in Freiburg. From 1822 to 1827 he was a substitute professor for the subject mineralogy.
In 1828 he became a full professor of chemistry in the medical faculty at the Grand Ducal Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg im Breisgau. In 1835 he gave the first lecture on "Physiological Chemistry" at the University of Freiburg and held an internship with his assistant Lambert Heinrich von Babo (1818–1899) with chemical-physiological and chemical-pathological examinations. With Fromherz the introduction of the natural sciences into medicine began in Freiburg. He was dean of the medical faculty from 1832 to 1833. In 1837 he was Vice Rector.
In 1829 Professor Fromherz became a member of the Society for Natural Science and Medicine in Heidelberg , in 1830 a member of the Medicinisch-Botanischen Gesellschaft in London and in 1832 general visitor to the pharmacies in the Dreisam and See districts. In 1844 he became a corresponding member of the mathematical-physical class of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
His writings on medicinal chemistry, today's biochemistry, published in 1832 and 1836, were regarded as the best publications of his time. Particular attention was paid to his examination of the work of Friedrich Wöhler ( Vis vitalis ).
In addition, Fromherz published numerous scientific papers on the geology of the Breisgau.
