Karl Garbe (journalist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Garbe (born April 22, 1927 in Bochum ; † August 23, 2019 in Bonn ) was a German journalist , writer and political manager.

Life

Born in Bochum, Garbe grew up in Witten-Annen and attended school in Witten and Dortmund until 1944 . He became a soldier in World War II and was captured by the Americans, from which he fled. After 1945 he embarked on a civil service career and worked in the city administrations of Herne and Hemer . Garbe gave up his administrative career in favor of a party career, so from 1950 to 1961 he was initially an editor at the SPD party executive in Hanover and moved with the party headquarters to the "barracks" in Bonn. From 1954 Garbe developed from a consultant for media evaluation to the editor-in-chief of the Juso central body Klarer Kurs , then in 1961 to head of the SPD's public relations department. From 1962 to 1974 Garbe was also a member of the ZDF television council , where he headed the entertainment committee. From 1970 Garbe worked as a freelance journalist and editor. Garbe lived in Bonn until his death.

Awards

Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker awarded the Federal Cross of Merit to Garbe in 1994, because "in a large number of publications he [contributed] to anchoring democratic awareness and the ability for fair political coexistence in the population of the Federal Republic."
