Karl Gruber (art historian)

Karl Heinrich Gruber (born February 15, 1943 in Brixen ) is an Italian Catholic clergyman , theologian and art historian from South Tyrol . He is Professor of Christian Art and Monument Preservation at the Philosophical-Theological University of Brixen .

Life

Gruber comes from Vintl in the Puster Valley , where he also attended elementary school. After attending high school in Brixen put Gruber in 1962 in Merano the Matura from. From 1962 to 1967 he studied theology at the seminary in Bressanone and was ordained a priest in 1967 . He then studied art history with Carl Theodor Müller and Wolfgang Braunfels at the University of Munich , where he received his doctorate in 1972 .

From 1973 to 2018 Gruber was head of the Church Monument Office of the Diocese of Bozen-Brixen . In 1973, Bishop Joseph Gargitter appointed him Professor of Christian Art and Monument Preservation at the Philosophical-Theological University of Bressanone. In 1979 he received the sponsorship award from the Kulturwerk für Südtirol. On April 18, 2010 Gruber was made an honorary canon at Brixen Cathedral . On February 20, 2019, he was awarded the Decoration of Honor of the State of Tyrol .

As an author and photographer, he has published numerous monographs on the subject of sacred art and customs in South Tyrol .
