Karl Hagemann (politician)

Karl Hagemann (born May 26, 1891 in Leipzig , † January 26, 1972 ) was a German publishing director and politician ( SED ). He was Deputy Minister for Culture of the GDR .

Life

Hagemann, son of a musician, learned the trade of bookbinder after attending school . In 1905 he became a member of the SAJ , in 1907 a member of the SPD . From 1915 to 1918 he did military service . He was a member of the soldiers' council in Lutsk . Then he returned to Leipzig. The KPD he was a member since its inception (1919). Because of his participation in the Central German uprising in 1921, he was sentenced to one and a half years in prison. From 1924 to 1928 he was a representative of a large bookbindery in Berlin , from 1928 to 1945 partner and managing director of “Fa. Berliner Buchgewerbe Nitz und Hagemann ”in Berlin.

After the " seizure " of the Nazis in 1933, Hagemann involved in the resistance . He produced and distributed illegal pamphlets .

From September 1945 to June 1956, Hagemann was the main director of the Volk und Wissen publishing house . In 1946 he became a member of the SED. From 1950 to 1954 he was a member of the board of directors of the German Booksellers Association . From 1956 to 1960 Hagemann was Deputy Minister for Culture and among other things responsible for publishing and book production . Hagemann resolutely advocated lifting the censorship , but later had to distance himself from his "mistakes" before the party.

His urn was in the grave conditioning Pergolenweg the memorial of the socialists at the Berlin Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde buried.
