Karl Heinrich Seibt
Karl Heinrich Ritter von Seibt (born March 21, 1735 in Mariental (Upper Lusatia) , † April 2, 1806 in Prague ) was a German educator and Catholic theologian in Bohemia.
Life
Seibt was the son of a monastery secretary and later cathedral clerk in Bautzen. He received his first training in the Marienthal monastery and continued his training from 1745 to 1750 with the Piarists in Kosmanos, Bohemia. He completed philosophical and aesthetic studies from 1751 at the University of Prague and 1756 at the University of Leipzig , where he was influenced by Christian Fürchtegott Gellert and Johann Christoph Gottsched . The Seven Years' War at that time prompted him to return to Prague, where he gave free lectures at the Wendish seminary .
In 1763 Maria Theresa appointed him as the first extraordinary professor of fine sciences and ethics in Prague as part of her educational reform of the Enlightenment . After the Jesuit order was abolished in 1775, he became director of the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague and director of the three Prague grammar schools. In 1784 he became rector of the Alma Mater and in 1785 rose to full professor of theology and philosophy. In 1794 he was knighted for his services to education and was dean of the philosophical faculty in the same year . After retiring in 1801, he died in his last place of work.
Grimm counts Seibt to the most important and influential thinkers in the Habsburg monarchy in the age of the enlightened absolutism . For the first time he did not teach in Latin, but in German, and stimulated the scientific and cultural scene in Prague. His contemporary Franz Martin Pelzel wrote : "Hardly a few years passed before the excellent writings of the beautiful German spirits were in everyone's hands". He exerted a strong influence on the next generation of scientists in Bohemia, including, for example, Josef Dobrovský .
