Karl Hempel (surgeon)

Karl Hempel (born June 21, 1923 in Kolberg , Pomerania Province ; † December 7, 2018 in Hamburg ) was a German surgeon and professional politician .

Life

With Horst Hamelmann , Hempel attended the humanistic cathedral high school in Kolberg . After graduating from high school, he studied medicine at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin and the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg . In the meantime he was a soldier in the army (Wehrmacht) on the front lines. In 1946 he passed the state examination and doctorate at the University of Hamburg . After years of assistant and senior physician, he became chief physician in the surgical department at the Hamburg-Wandsbek general hospital in 1969 , and from 1965 as medical director . In 1978 he headed the 122nd meeting of the Association of North German Surgeons in Hamburg . In 1988 he retired. During his surgical activity he made numerous study trips abroad, including to Copenhagen , Chur , London , Glasgow and above all to the USA ( Harvard , New York, Newark and North Carolina ). In 1982, while he was still active, Karl Hempel was unanimously elected as the successor to Wolfgang Müller-Osten as President on the Presidium of the Professional Association of German Surgeons (BDC) , an office that he held for four terms until 1998. During this time the number of members has almost quadrupled. When the office was handed over to his successor Witte, the surgeon was unanimously elected honorary president by the executive committee of the BDC.
