Karl Hermann von Heyden

Karl Hermann von Heyden (born August 2, 1840 in Frankfurt am Main ; † March 22, 1917 there ) was a Prussian officer and chamberlain . He is considered to be one of the founders of modern phaleristics .

Life

He was the son of the lay judge and mayor of Frankfurt am Main Carl Heinrich Georg von Heyden and his wife Julie, née Freiin von Dörnberg . From 1847 to 1854 he attended an educational institution in his hometown and was accepted into the cadet house in Bensberg on May 2, 1854 . On May 17, 1859, Heyden was hired as a characterized porter ensign in the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot in the Prussian Army . There he was promoted to secondary lieutenant on July 12, 1860 and as such he was transferred to the 30th Infantry Regiment on June 24, 1863 . At the war against Austria Heyden took 1866 as regimental adjutant part. In the war against France , he was promoted to captain and received the Iron Cross, 2nd class , for the Battle of the Lisaine in 1871 .

In 1884 he was promoted to major and transferred to the 2nd Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 32 . Since his health over time had suffered greatly, Heyden was on December 13, 1887. Pension and permission to wear the uniform of the regiment farewell granted. On February 15, 1890, he was finally put to the disposition and on September 10, 1897 he was given the character of lieutenant colonel .

At the end of December 1887 he entered the court service of Duke Georg II of Saxony-Meiningen and became chamberlain to Princess Marie Elisabeth. For health reasons he retired in 1901 and moved back to his hometown of Frankfurt am Main. In 1903 he moved to Wiesbaden , but in 1915 he returned to Frankfurt am Main. Heyden fell seriously ill in mid-March 1917 and died on March 22, 1917.

As a young officer, Heyden had already dealt with numismatics . From this he came to phaleristics . He started German and foreign orders and decorations and medals to collect and also wrote several books, which even today still serve as standard works. He is considered to be one of the founders of modern scientific phaleristics.

He married on November 6, 1872 Wilhelmine Elisabeth Konstantine Marie Alexandrine von Manderstjerna (born October 20, 1840) from Riga.
