Karl Andreas Herz (born November 28, 1898 in Dieburg , † July 11, 1970 in Darmstadt ) was a German engineer , editor , ministerial official and university professor . From 1960 to 1963 he was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Post and Telecommunications .

Life

After attending the Oberrealschule in Dieburg and Darmstadt , he studied at the Technical University of Darmstadt , where he graduated as an engineer in 1923.

From 1923 to 1925 he worked for various companies in Berlin , including AEG as a project engineer. At the Reichspostzentralamt in Berlin he was employed as a clerk from 1925 to 1931. He then went to Uruguay and managed the expansion of the new telecommunications network from 1931 to 1934.

When he returned to Germany, he was director of the Deutsche Fernkabelgesellschaft in Berlin from 1935 to 1939 . From 1939 to 1942 he headed the Reichspostzentralamt. In the Reich Ministry for the postal service , he was from 1942 to 1945, the group leader for the telecommunications-wide area technology. From 1945 to 1947 he was employed in the British zone as head of the telecommunications department of the Reichspost Headquarters. As chief engineer and president of the Central Postal and Telecommunications Office, he worked from 1947 to 1949. When the Central Telecommunications Office was created from it in 1949 , he continued to take over the office of President until 1959. On January 1, 1960, he was appointed State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for the Post and Telecommunications, where he worked until 1963.

In recognition of his services to the reconstruction of the German telecommunications system after the war and in recognition of his work as Chairman of the VDE , the TH Hannover awarded him the academic title of Dr.-Ing. E. h. The Technical University of Berlin made him an honorary senator in 1955 and the Hessian Minister for Education and National Education in 1957 made him an honorary professor for international communications technology at the Technical University of Darmstadt . Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer awarded Prof. Dr. Heart on May 3, 1963, the Great Federal Cross of Merit with Star and Shoulder Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany. On January 2, 1969, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, he was honored with the Silver Merit Plaque of the City of Darmstadt.

He held the office of chairman of the German Association of Technical and Scientific Associations from 1956 to 1960. He was the editor of the specialist journal Der Fernmelde-Ingenieur and the book series Jahrbuch des Elektrfernmeldewesens .
