Karl Joseph of Austria (1745–1761)

Karl Joseph von Habsburg-Lothringen (born February 1, 1745 in Vienna , † January 18, 1761 in Vienna) was Archduke of Austria .

Archduke Karl Joseph Emanuel Johann Nepomuck Anton Prokop of Habsburg-Lothringen was born on February 1, 1745 as the seventh child and second son of Empress Maria Theresia of Austria and her husband Franz I Stephan of Lothringen in Vienna.

In contrast to his older brother Joseph, who later became Emperor Joseph II , he was considered extroverted and open-minded. The boy soon became his parents' favorite son and, with his charm and intelligence, won the affection and respect of his siblings and the entire court. Maria Theresa’s favoring Karl Joseph fueled rivalry between the brothers.

Karl Joseph should have succeeded his father as Grand Duke of Tuscany , but he contracted smallpox at the age of fifteen and died. Had he lived longer, he would have succeeded his brother Joseph as emperor after the death of his brother in 1790.

After the death of his older brother, Archduke Leopold, who was two years his junior and later Emperor Leopold II , took the place of his father Franz I Stephan as Grand Duke of Tuscany . Archduke Karl Joseph Maria Ludovica of Spain was originally supposed to marry, but his early death prevented the marriage and Archduke Leopold took the Bourbon princess as his wife.
