Karl Manteuffel (* 1924 ) is a German mathematician and professor of linear optimization and linear algebra as well as operations research and game theory . He became known as the author and editor of mathematical textbooks and extensive textbook series for non-mathematicians ( MINÖL ).

Live and act

Karl Manteuffel completed a school education before and during the Second World War, which he graduated from high school in 1943 . He then studied at the Martin Luther University in Halle (Saale) to 1950 mathematics and received his degree in mathematics . Then his doctorate he here in 1954 to Dr. rer. nat.

He started his career as a mathematician at what was then the University of Heavy Engineering in Magdeburg . As a senior assistant and then as a lecturer and since 1959 as a professor at the Technical University "Otto von Guericke" and the Technical University "Otto von Guericke" as well as the Otto von Guericke University , his main areas of responsibility were the content and organizational design of mathematics education , preferably for engineering students. His earlier students remember the methodologically well-structured lectures and his exact blackboard painting.

He was also involved in the development and implementation of application-oriented research. In close cooperation with experts in practice and with university lecturers of technical subjects, problems from the field of mechanical engineering, metallurgy and transport were processed using various mathematical methods from stochastics and game theory, algebra and number theory, graph theory and network planning technology, from linear and non-linear optimization. In this context, he also obtained his habilitation (Doctorate B) as Dr. sc. nat. as well as the Facultas Docendi as a prerequisite .

Manteuffel presented an extensive journalistic work as the author of the chapters "Mathematics and Operations Research" in volumes 1 and 4 of the knowledge store for technologists and as the editor of the 9-volume textbook series mathematics for technical universities (with licensed editions in Switzerland ). He played an important role as co-founder, editor and author of the modularized textbook series mathematics for engineers, scientists, economists and farmers ( MINÖL ), the 27 volumes and 4 exercise volumes of which have also been published as licensed editions in Switzerland and the Federal Republic of Germany. This series was continued after German reunification . He is the responsible editor or author of 17 of the 44 volumes. Even the history of science posts back to Manteuffel. He is also the author and co-author of popular science books .
