Karl Merz (born February 26, 1869 in Reutlingen , † June 5, 1950 in Tübingen ) was a German sculptor who worked in Tübingen .

Live and act

Karl Merz settled in Tübingen after completing his training at the Stuttgart School of Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich as well as studying in Italy, where he received a position as a drawing teacher at the Oberrealschule (today Wildermuth High School) and his own art studio in the Tübingen Karlstrasse.

His best-known work is the figure of the nymph made of white Tuscan marble from 1910 in the park at the plant lake in Tübingen, which is now a little hidden because it stands romantically on a loop of the Mühlbach in a densely overgrown area. It was originally on a higher plinth part of the stone fountain that received its water from the nearby Lützelbrunnen . Until 1961 this was located in a small facility with benches designed by Theodor Fischer on the corner of Neckarbrücke / Gartenstrasse, in front of the Neckarmüllerei.

Among his other works are the sculpture "Die Reue" (multiple awards, also at the World Exhibition in St. Louis, Missouri, 1904 ), today in the Lenbachhaus in Munich , the children's fountain in the former town hall in Stuttgart (1909), a bust of Tübingen Lord Mayor Hermann Haußer , a relief medallion by the local poet Matthias Koch and the memorial for General Otto von Haldenwang in Münsingen-Buttenhausen .

The Lustnau Museum of Local History kept his drawing legacy until it was closed .

One of Merz's students was the Tübingen sculptor Ugge Bärtle .
