Karl Russ , also in the spelling Russ (born August 11, 1779 in Vienna ; † September 19, 1843 ibid), was an Austrian painter of the Biedermeier era.

Life

Karl Russ studied at the Vienna Academy and mainly painted scenes from mythology, antiquity and depictions from Austrian history. In 1806 he worked on the interior of the Albertina .

From 1810 he was Archduke Johann's chamber painter and accompanied him on hikes through Styria in order to get to know the country and to find motifs for the pictures he requested. Johann commissioned him to capture the clothes of the common people in the country with their Styrian costumes in a watercolor series. Soot passed on to posterity what is authentically known about clothing and costumes from the period between 1810 and 1820, from the festive robes of bourgeois women to the robes of peasant boys. The basic work on Styrian costumes, the Styrian costume book by folklorist Viktor von Geramb , contains many of the depictions of soot.

Soot was the second curator of the Imperial and Royal Picture Gallery in Belvedere Palace from 1818 and the first from 1821 .
