Leander Russ (born November 25, 1809 in Vienna , † March 8, 1864 in Kaltenleutzüge or Vienna) was an Austrian painter .

Life

Leander Russ was born in the Vienna suburb of Mariahilf No. 21 (today Amerlingstrasse 10) as the son of the painter Karl Russ . His older sister was the painter Clementine Russ (1804–1869). After receiving his first lessons from his father, Russ studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1823 to 1828 under Karl Gsellhofer and Josef Redl the Elder. In
1828 he received the Gundel Prize and from that year took part in the Academy's annual exhibitions at irregular intervals. After traveling to Munich and Rome , he accompanied the orientalist Anton Graf Prokesch-Osten on a trip to the Orient in 1833, which strongly influenced his further artistic development. From 1841 he created peep-box pictures for Emperor Ferdinand I. In 1848 Russ became a member of the Vienna Academy.

In the reference works, the place of death is indicated differently: either the Viennese suburb Rustendorf No. 48 (today Dadlergasse 7) or Kaltenleutgabe near Vienna. Russ was buried in the Schmelzer Friedhof in Vienna. In 1927 the Rußweg in Vienna- Hietzing was named after him and his father.

Leander Russ was a painter of the Vienna Vormärz and mainly created portraits , genre and history pictures . His preferred technique was watercolor . His peep-box pictures were very popular, depicting folk life in Vienna at the time, but also pictures from the Orient.
