Karl Schellein
Karl Schellein (born June 11, 1820 in Bamberg , † April 9, 1888 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter and restorer born in Bavaria .
Schellein studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Heinrich Maria von Hess , and continued studying at other art schools.
Schellein initially worked in the Schleißheim palace complex , but visited Vienna in 1848, where he met the future director of the picture gallery in the Belvedere Palace, Erasmus Engert . In the restoration school founded and run by Engert in 1867, Schellein worked as custodian adjunct and from 1871, as Engert's successor, as custodian and headmaster until his death.
In 1881 Schellein was appointed to the committee of the Altertums-Verein zu Vienna. Schellein became a member of the Imperial and Royal Central Commission for Research and Conservation of Art and Historical Monuments .
Karl Schellein was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order in 1876 . In 1891 the Schelleingasse in Vienna was named after him.
