Karl Schenk (artist)

Karl Schenk (born October 24, 1905 in Bern , † December 14, 1973 in Bern ) was a Swiss painter and sculptor .

Life

Schenk was the son of an art locksmith. While he was doing an apprenticeship as a gravestone cutter under pressure from his father, he began to draw and paint. In 1934 he received a scholarship and moved to Paris with his wife. Here he met the sculptors Sandoz and Arnold Huggler . He returned to his native Bern with around 400 drawings and settled here as a freelance sculptor and painter.

Schenk's sculptures and sculptures can be seen on public buildings and facilities in Bern, Zurich , Winterthur , Solothurn , Lucerne and Ticino . He created a large mosaic of Drinking Faun for the city of Bern's water supply . On behalf of the municipality of Köniz , he designed a 3 × 5 m large glass window in the local water supply. The wood carvings for Entire Peasant Life at the Stadtbernian estate in Kiesen also come from him. His designs from 1941 have been preserved for the murals in the reception hall of Bern's town hall.

In painting, to which he mainly devoted himself to the last twenty years, children and animals played a central role. Schenk's pictures are privately owned in Switzerland and abroad (Germany, Canada, USA) as well as in public buildings.
