Carl Alfred Ludwig 12th Duke of Croy (* 29. January 1859 in Brussels ; † 28. September 1906 in Castle Karapancsa at Hercegszántó in Hungary ) was Standesherr the former Westphalian sovereignty Dülmen and member of the Prussian manor .

Origin and family

Carl Alfred von Croÿ came from a primeval Picardy family that appeared as early as the 12th century with Guermond and Robert de Croy. The family had spread to the southern Netherlands (now part of Belgium and northern France) since the late Middle Ages . The rule of Croy was raised to a duchy by King Henry IV of France in 1598 , in return the Croy, as feudal lords in what was then the Spanish Netherlands, were honored with the dignity of Grand First Class of Spain.

In the course of the French conquests by the revolutionary armies, the areas on the left bank of the Rhine, which had previously belonged to the Roman Empire of the German Nation, were annexed by France in the Peace of Lunéville in 1801 and the feudal lords there (besides Croÿ also Arenberg , Metternich , Quadt and others) expropriated. Through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , these were compensated in 1803 by secularized spiritual areas in Germany on the right bank of the Rhine. The Croÿ family received the rule of Dülmen on this occasion and was assigned to Prussia in the Peace of Vienna in 1815 . From October 12, 1854, they became hereditary members of the Prussian manor house.

Life

Carl Alfred Herzog von Croÿ was born in Brussels as the only son of Rudolf, 11th Duke of Croÿ and Princess Natalie von Ligne . One of his four sisters was Archduchess Isabella of Austria . After the death of his father, Carl Alfred not only inherited the rule of Dülmen, but also his seat in the Prussian mansion, which he held from 1902 to 1906. In 1884 and 1885 he was a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Westphalia as his father's representative . He was married to Marie-Ludmilla Princess and Duchess of Arenberg (1870-1953) since April 25, 1888 . This marriage resulted in four children, three sons and the daughter Isabella . Carl Alfred Herzog von Croy died on September 28, 1906 in Karapancsa Castle in Hungary. His son Karl Rudolf Engelbert Philipp Leo followed him as the 13th Duke.
