Karl Wilhelm Frithjof Freiherr von Hammerstein-Gesmold (born September 30, 1866 in Verden , † May 13, 1932 in Bockel ) was a German administrative lawyer, politician and Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John .

Life

Karl von Hammerstein-Gesmold was a son of the Prussian Major General Emil von Hammerstein-Gesmold (1827-1894) and his wife Ingeborg, née Freiin Marschalck von Bachtenbrock (1845-1910). The later lieutenant general and knight of the order Pour le Mérite Frithjof von Hammerstein-Gesmold (1870-1944) was his younger brother.

Career

After attending grammar schools in Stralsund and Pforzheim, he studied law at the universities of Strasbourg, Berlin and Göttingen. In Strasbourg he became a member of the Corps Rhenania Strasbourg . Hammerstein did his military service as a one-year volunteer in 1888/89 and became captain of the reserve in the infantry regiment “King Wilhelm II of Württemberg” (6th Royal Saxon) No. 105 .

After the first state examination in 1893, he was a trainee lawyer at the Higher Regional Court of Celle, Hildesheim and Zeven. In 1898 he became a government assessor. As the owner of the manor in Bockel, he was first acting district administrator in 1900, then from 1901 to 1930 district administrator in the district of Zeven . The city of Zeven made Hammerstein an honorary citizen in 1930 . From 1900 to 1932 he was a member of the Hanover Provincial Parliament .

family

Hammerstein married Marie Freiin von Bothmer (* 1875) on March 4, 1900 in Hildesheim . The two sons Frithjof (* 1902) and Sigurd (* 1903) emerged from the marriage.
