Karl Joseph von Schmid (born March 4, 1832 in Munderkingen , † December 6, 1893 in Stuttgart ) was a German politician and Minister of the Interior of the Kingdom of Württemberg .

Life

After attending grammar school in Ehingen , Schmid moved to the Wilhelmsstift in Tübingen in 1851 and studied Catholic theology until 1852 . From 1852 to 1857 he studied law at the universities of Tübingen and Freiburg . In Tübingen he became a member of the Ulmia Landsmannschaft . After completing his studies, he was a lawyer in Rottenburg until 1858 and then in Munderkingen, where from 1861 to 1872 he also worked as a school- hot city . In 1866, under the influence of the German War , Schmid helped found the national liberal German party . From 1868 to 1882 and again from 1889 until his death he held a seat in the Chamber of Deputies of the Württemberg Land estates from the voters of the Ehingen District Office .

From 1871 to 1879 he was also a member of the Reichstag for the constituency of Württemberg 15 ( Ehingen , Blaubeuren , Laupheim , Münsingen ) , until 1877 in the faction of the National Liberal Party , then in the faction of the German Reich Party . On September 8, 1879, he resigned his mandate because of his appointment as Federal Councilor.

In 1872 he went to Ulm as a lawyer and joined the Württemberg state service in Stuttgart in 1873 as chief finance officer. The appointment was made because of his work as chief rapporteur on the tax reform in the Second Chamber. Since 1880 Schmid was the Württemberg representative at the Federal Council . On September 9, 1887, Schmid succeeded his predecessor and party friend Julius Hoelder as Minister of the Interior. Schmid supported King Karl in 1888 against the hostility in the affair of the royal companion Charles Woodcock.

family

Karl von Schmid came from a Catholic family of craftsmen. His father was the master tanner Joseph Schmid and ran the Hirsch Gasthaus in Munderkingen. His wife's name was Sophia nee Schönle and had a total of ten children, but only three of them reached adulthood. Karl von Schmid was married to Bertha Schuster (* 1835, † 1904) since 1857. This marriage resulted in three grown up children, one of whom married a nephew of Adolf Gröber .
