Carnival Prince

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The carnival prince (also called carnival and carnival prince), usually just called "prince", is the head of fools in carnival, carnival and carnival in many regions . The analogy to the nobility title prince is intentional and is also expressed in actions and appearance.

Term of office

This is the responsibility of the respective home committee, festival committee etc. and the associated region. The term of office of a "madness" begins with his / her enthronement / proclamation. As a rule, however, the “term of office” of a tollity ends when the subsequent tollity is proclaimed. The handling differs from place to place.

Forms of government

The prince rules alone, as a prince couple together with a princess, in a triumvirate or with a master of ceremonies . But he is always the most important person and rules the fifth season. In some places the office is taken over by a princess. In many cases, the prince couple is accompanied by a court or a suite of princes - such as the Elferrat - which is a parody of the court servants of real noble houses. There are court jesters, ladies-in-waiting, the cupbearer, the treasurer, etc. The members of the court support the prince in his representative duties and, as a rule, they are also assigned organizational tasks.

Examples of forms of government with princes in Carnival, Mardi Gras and Mardi Gras:

  • Prince (as sole ruler)
  • Triumvirate (especially in Cologne Carnival )
  • Prince and Lahno-Rhenania (as patron goddess of the foolish city on the Lahn and Rhine) in the Lahnstein Carnival
  • Prince and his lady Novesia in the Neuss carnival
  • Prince and his lady Confluentia in the Koblenz Carnival
  • Prince and Bonna in the Bonn Carnival
  • Prince and Godesia in the Bad Godesberg Carnival
  • Prince couple (in Mainz Carnival only on special occasions)
  • Prince and master of ceremonies in the Eschweiler Carnival
  • Prince with court in Aachen carnival
  • Prince and his lady Venetia at the Düsseldorf Carnival
  • Prince, cook and cellar master (KG Hofgrafen Hürth-Kalscheuren)
  • Prince and Siegburgia with entourage (Siegburg Carnival)
  • Prinz vino palatina (can be male or female - Neustadt Weinstrasse)
  • Rosenkavalier (Frankenthal, Pfalz)
  • Prince and his two adjutants (Carnival in Linz on the Rhine)
  • Prince, two pages, a court jester and a treasurer ( Kelmis , Belgium)
  • Prince and Princess (Impflinger Carneval Association, Impflingen , Palatinate)
  • Prince and two Paginnen (possibly court staff), alternatively: Princess, two pages (Ostbelgien, Oudler , Sankt Vith , Eupen , Büllingen , ...)
  • Prince with princess and entourage (pages, maids, ministers etc.) and a herald of the KG Herschbach ( Herschbach )

Status

" His madness ", together with any co-rulers who may be present, is a symbol of the foolish rule of the respective carnival, Mardi Gras and Mardi Gras stronghold . In some cities and towns , he even enjoys special privileges . The prince's office is associated with many representative duties and, especially in the carnival strongholds, with not inconsiderable costs. However, since the prince receives a lot of public attention, he is also supported by local sponsors in many places.

Wherever this custom takes place, it is carried out very seriously, and it is a special honor for every official ( prince , prince couple, triumvirate ) to assume this office. For the duration of the carnival season, the prince becomes a public figure in his city, whose presence at social events, even beyond the carnival events, is highly valued.

In Eichhof in the Bergisches Land , three disabled people formed the local triumvirate for the first time in the 2014 carnival session: Prince Guido I, farmer Helmut and Jungfrau Sina.

Selection process

Southern municipalities of East Belgium

In many carnival societies in East Belgium , especially those with smaller areas, the prince is provided by the bachelor clubs. In contrast to the traditional Cologne Carnival, it is also possible to proclaim a princess. The selection process is organized internally in the clubs. The prince (essin) then decides on two pag (inn) s, who often come from the direct circle of friends, and - if provided by the carnival society - puts together a court staff that takes on elementary activities during the carnival session. In many southern municipalities of the German-speaking Community of Belgium, the court staff consists of court drivers, financial advisors and court jesters. The number and task constellation can be expanded as required, e.g. B. to the services of a pre-taster.
