Karol Czejarek

Karol Krystian Czejarek (born August 11, 1939 in Berlin ) is a Polish Germanist , translator and university professor.

Life

His father Roman Czejarek was a Pole born in Zabrze (then Hindenburg OS) in 1913 , studied linguistics since 1931, and also worked for the Union of Poles in Germany . After the seizure of power in 1933, Roman Czejarek was expelled from the university and employed in the mine in Giesen . There he met his future wife Maria geb. Know Mellin. The young couple came to Berlin, where Karol was born in 1939 and Roman completed his studies at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität and was appointed lecturer.

After the Second World War , Roman Czejarek was employed by the Polish Military Mission in Germany.

In 1948 Karol Czejarek's father moved with his family to Szczecin , where he was hoping for a job at the Technical University that was then established. For the authorities at the time, however, he was considered politically suspicious and could not realize his plans. He died in 1953, after his death his wife left Stettin and came back to Germany. Karol Czejarek stayed alone in Szczecin.

After graduating from high school in 1956, he worked in the book trade, did his military service from 1959 to 1961, studied German at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan from 1963 , came to Warsaw from Szczecin in 1973, where he became active on the cultural scene, a. a. held the post of director of a department in the Ministry of Culture and the Arts.

After the end of communist rule in 1989, he returned to his main job, German studies. In 1990 he received his doctorate from the Humanistic Faculty of the University of Szczecin for his doctoral thesis Proza Anny Seghers: problematyka i type bohatera zaangażowanego ("Prose by Anna Seghers . Problem and type of a committed hero"). Then he was employed at the University of Warsaw in the Faculty of Applied Linguistics.

He currently holds the post of associate professor for German studies at the pedagogical faculty of the Humanistic Academy "Aleksander Gieysztor" (Pułtusk) as well as the general secretary of the Interfaculty Center for German Studies . Karol Czejarek also takes part in the east-west forum Gut Gödelitz eV.

Karol Czejarek translated many of Hans Hellmut Kirst's works and edited their complete edition. He also translated works by Georg Heym , Günter Kunert , Hans Walldorf , Heiner Müller , Günter de Bruyn , Ursula Hörig and Christa Grasmeyer . He also works as a sworn interpreter.

Karol Czejarek is a member of the Polish Writers' Association (ZLP).

During his stay in Szczecin he was known as a cyclist.
