Karolinenhof is a location in the Schmöckwitz district in the Treptow-Köpenick district in Berlin with around 2000 inhabitants.

location

Karolinenhof on the stretch of the Uferbahn

Karolinenhof is located around five kilometers southeast of Grünau between the west bank of the Long Lake and the Adlergestell road . In the south it borders on the locality of Schmöckwitz. Two islands, the large and the small Rohrwall, lie in front of Karolinenhof in the Long Lake. While the small Rohrwallinsel, like Karolinenhof itself, belongs to the Schmöckwitz district, the large Rohrwallinsel Grünau is assigned. The Krumme Lake rises in the forest on Schappachstrasse .

history

In 1785 the Karolinenhof farm was founded by the farmer Kersten. He named the estate after his wife Karoline and farmed 72  hectares of land that he had leased from the community of Schmöckwitz.

In the 1880s, an excursion inn (“Seeschlösschen Carolinenhof”) was built on the banks of the Langen See, and a laundry in the neighborhood. Both houses on Rehfeldtstrasse have been preserved. In 1895, the Berlin banker Albert Schappach founded the Carolinenhof terracing company and had a villa colony built on the area. He had his villa and horse stable built at Schappachstrasse 16, which was used as a kindergarten until the 1990s. The building at Schappachstrasse 27 also dates from the same year. Both buildings, Schappachstrasse 16 and 27, are listed .

In 1901 there were already 13 houses on today's Schappachstrasse / Rehfeldtstrasse / Vetschauer Allee . After the First World War , the population rose steadily. From 1902 the Schmöckwitz – Grünauer Uferbahn was also planned and implemented in 1912, which connected the Karolinenhof in Grünau to the Berlin suburban trains. The Uferbahn formerly came from Grünau through today's Vetschauer Allee, Schappachstrasse through the forest parallel to Karolinenhofweg , directly behind the gardens to the Adlergestell. Since Karolinenhof developed differently than planned, the tram line was moved from Schappachstrasse to Vetschauer Allee in 1925. Water sports clubs settled along the banks of the Dahme.

At the end of the Second World War , in May 1945, the Karolinenhof forest cemetery was created as an emergency cemetery in the forest southwest of the Adlergestell / Vetschauer Allee intersection. Around 100 Karolinenhofer found their final resting place here by the end of 1946. Since the cellars of the houses on Karolinenhofweg were often under water due to the high groundwater level and boggy soil, the pool was created on the Fechtwiese on Rehfeldstraße after the Second World War.

In 1960 there were around 2000 people living in 650 houses in Karolinenhof.

Karolinenhof was a popular landing stage for the GDR government's boat trips in the 1980s . Houseboats are now moored on the former Honeckersteg at the western exit of the town. Until the 1990s, Karolinenhof had three grocery stores, a fruit and vegetable shop, a drugstore, post office, baker, hairdresser and kindergarten as well as several restaurants. Today there is only one free kindergarten.

Street naming

In addition to the streets in the historical core, which are named after personalities from local history (Karoline, Schappachstraße and Rehfeldt), and the Rohrwallallee named after the islands, the other streets are named after places in the Spreewald , such as Lübbenauer Weg , Vetschauer Allee or Krugauer Steig .
