Gellendorf

Gellendorf is a district of Rheine in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The village is located on the Ems and has 2,101 inhabitants (December 2014).

history

People already settled here in prehistoric times, as shown by barrows. Gellendorf was mentioned in a document in 900 as "Gelanthorpe" . Later the names "Gelincthorp" , "Ghelinctorpe" and from the 14th century "Gelincthorp" can be found . Since the Gellendorf owns the Nazi era , a barracks and a military training area . In 1960, the troop accommodation in Gellendorf was handed over by the commander in Defense Area III and Rheine has been a garrison town again since then. The troops were completely withdrawn from Gellendorf in 2002. With the establishment of Gartenstadt Gellendorf GmbH in 2006, it was possible to build on part of the empty barracks with residential and commercial buildings.

Waters

The Ems flows west 1 km away. In order to be spared the annual floods, the courtyards were always built on hills in the Middle Ages. Fichtenvennsee and a quarry pond are other bodies of water in Gellendorf.

religion

The St. Konrad Church, built in 1960/61, was profaned on November 22, 2009 . It was later sold to a fashion company. In 2018 it was converted into a fitness studio .

Infrastructure

The Konrad elementary school and two kindergartens are available in Gellendorf.

traffic

Gellendorf is located 2 km southeast of Rheine on the federal highway 475 , which leads from Rheine to Emsdetten . Three motorways are within easy reach: the A 30 5 km north, the A 31 15 km west and the A 1 south-east 25 km.

economy

The textile factory FA Kümpers has built settlement houses, "the Kümpersiedlungen", for its workers.
