Kaspar Kornelius Mortaigne de Potelles (* 1609 in Wallonia , † July 18, 1647 in front of Rheinfels ) was a general in the Swedish army during the Thirty Years War .

His brother Christoph von Mortaigne was also in the Swedish service. He fell as a colonel in the infantry.

Life

He probably came to Germany as a squire of Philipp von Hessen-Kassel (son of Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel ); he had been trained as a soldier in Holland and had probably got to know the young Kaspar Kornelius there. Philip fell on the Protestant side in the Battle of Lutter on August 27, 1626. Kaspar Kornelius will probably remain in the Swedish service, one hears from him during the fighting for Landsberg in 1632 under Christian von Birkenfeld . As a major, he becomes the commander of the conquered city. During the reconquest of the city by imperial troops, he was taken prisoner, from which he could later buy himself free. On October 3, 1635, Mortaigne de Potelles received command of the Plau fortress in Mecklenburg, which had been conquered by the Swedes, for a few months . In 1637 he was appointed colonel and in 1641 major general. He was wounded in the siege of Brieg in 1642, but in the second battle near Breitenfeld he fought again as commander of the infantry. After the battle he moved to Moravia and captured a number of towns.

On February 12, 1645, he was on his way to the headquarters in Leipzig with important documents when he was captured by imperial troops near Borna . He is brought to Pilsen and can buy his way out. In the battle of Jankau (March 6, 1645) he commanded the Swedish center again. He then moved on to Moravia, where he besieged other cities.

In 1647 he received permission from the Swedish Queen Christina to join the army of the Swedish ally Hessen-Kassel. He was now to conquer the Rheinfels fortress in Hesse-Darmstadt near St. Goar. On June 19, 1647, he occupied the town of Kaub and Gutenfels Castle ; on July 18, 1647, his leg was torn off by a cannonball during the siege, and he died shortly afterwards of the injury. His successor in Hessen-Kassel was Johann von Geyso .

In 1644 he was accepted into the Literary Fruitful Society under the name of the Dedicated .

family

He was married to one of Weidenbach , daughter of the Saxon court master Hans Georg von Weidenbach . She died in childbed shortly after him. His son Johann Theodor de Mortaignes († 1691) was in command of the Szeged Fortress and the Petersberg Citadel .
