topography
The 53 hectare forest area is located in the Central River Region in the district of Nianija and was set up like the other forest parks in Gambia on January 1, 1954. The Gassang Forest Park is about 3.4 kilometers northwest of Kuntaur as the crow flies . The area is about 600 meters south of North Bank Road , Gambia's second most important highway , from where it is another two kilometers east to the Wassu . Six kilometers to the west is the Nianimaru Forest Park .
The approximately 1.7 long and 0.3 km wide area is bounded by the right northern bank of the Gambia River . Near the area, at the coordinate: 13 ° 44 ' N , 14 ° 55' W, there is Kassang Hill , a 49 meter high hill.
The Gassang Forest Park is located in a region where the numerous Senegambian stone circles can be found.
history
In the 15th century, the Portuguese , the first Europeans to be on the Gambia River in the history of the Gambia , maintained numerous bases. Among other things, they had a trading post called Kassan , also spelled Cassan , the forest area takes its name from this place.
