The park lies in the field of rural communities Kartuzy (Kashubian Kartuzë , German Karthaus ) Chmielno (Chmielno, Chmelno) , Stężyca (Stãżëca, Stendsitz) , Sierakowice (Serakòjce, Sierakowitz) and Somonino (Somonino, Semlin) in kartuzy county , Kościerzyna ( Kòscérzna, Berent) and Nowa Karczma (Nowô Karczma, Neukrug) in the powiat Kościerski and Linia (Lëniô, Linia) in the powiat Wejherowski . The administration is located in the city of Kartuzy.

The protected area was founded on June 15, 1983 and today has an area of ​​332 km² and a protection zone of 324.9 km². The park comprises 50% agricultural land, 34% forest and 10.3% water. The largest of 34 lakes in the park is the Raduńskie Dolne (7.3 km²), the deepest of the Raduńskie Górne with a depth of 43 meters. There are twelve nature reserves, eight other protected areas and six Natura 2000 areas in the park , which make up 40 percent of the total area. (As of January 2018)

The area belongs to the Baltic ridge and is a moraine landscape shaped by the Ice Age, into which raft lakes are cut. Wetlands and peat bogs have formed in some areas. The Wzgórza Szymbarskie ( Szëmbarsczé Grzëpë , German about: Schönberger Heights) have an average height of over 260 meters above sea level. The Wieżyca (Wieżëca, Turmberg) is 329 meters high, the highest mountain in northern Poland, the highest mountain between the Harz Mountains in the west and the Dsjarschynskaja Hara near Minsk in the east and also the highest elevation in the area of ​​the former province of West Prussia .

The Kashubian Ethnographic Park is located in the village of Wdzydze Kiszewskie .
