Wdzydze Kiszewskie (Kashubian Kiszewsczé Wdzëdzé , German 1874–1920 Wdzidzen , 1942–1945 Sanddorf ) is a Kashubian village in Poland in the Pomeranian Voivodeship . It belongs to the rural community Kościerzyna (Berent) in the powiat Kościerski . The village lies on the lake Wdzydze (Weitsee) .
When it was first mentioned in 1280, Wdzydze Kiszewskie was subordinate to the Starost of Stara Kiszewa (Old Kischau) . At the end of the 17th century the population consisted of 11 fishing families. In 1770 40 people lived in the village.
The open-air museum, which emerged from poverty-related depopulation in the 19th century, has now become the economic base of the town.
Kashubian Ethnographic Park
The Kashubian town was abandoned at the end of the 19th century when the inhabitants moved to the Vistula-Nogat Delta, Saxony and Mecklenburg in search of work.
In 1906 the village became an open-air museum on the initiative of the Kashubian couple Theodora and Isidor Gulgowski . Today, as the Kashubian Ethnographic Park (Kaszubski Park Etnograficzny), it is the oldest open-air museum in Poland.
