Katafygi caves
In Greece , a number of caves bears the name Katafygi ( Greek σπηλιές καταφυγής ), but mainly on the Mani peninsula / Peloponnese . In Greek καταφυγή ( katafygi ) means “retreat, refuge”.
Five of the caves are within 40 kilometers as the crow flies on the west coast of the Mani Peninsula. The description is from north to south.

Katafygi Megali Madinia
Location: Peloponnese / Messenia ; near 36 ° 57 '39 " N , 22 ° 9' 28" O , one kilometer northwest of Megali Madinia ( Greek Μεγάλη Μαντίνεια ).
Katafygi Vatsinidi
Also: Katafygi Kardamylis
Location: Peloponnese / Messenia ; 36 ° 52 '6 " N , 22 ° 14' 42" O , 3.6 kilometers south of Kardamyli ( Greek Καρδαμύλη ) 250 meters north of the Fonias -Bay ( Greek κόλπος Φονιάς ).
The main entrance is in a sinkhole , the second above-ground access is a shaft . The cave is connected to the sea by a "drowned" portal about 20 meters deep . The cave covers 2400 m², of which 1100 m² is a lake.
It was first described by Ioannis Petrocheilos in the early 1950s. Sintered stone walls prove the centuries-old use.
Katafygi Selinitsas
Location: Peloponnese / Messenia ; 36 ° 48 ′ 10 ″ N , 22 ° 17 ′ 51 ″ E , 3.5 kilometers south of Agios Nikolaos ( Greek Άγιος Νικόλαος ).
Findings of human bones and black pottery testify to its earlier importance as a place of worship or a place of protection.
With a total length of four kilometers, the Selinitsa-Drakos system is the fourth longest cave in Greece (as of 2005).
Katafygi Trachilas
Location: Peloponnese / Messenia ; about 2.5 kilometers south of Trachila ( Greek Τραχήλα ).
The cave consists of three floors; the entrance is blocked by a protective wall.
Katafygi Dirou
Location: Peloponnese / Laconia ; 36 ° 38 '18 " N , 22 ° 22' 26" O , at Pyrgos Dirou ( Greek Πύργος Διρού ) below Areopoli ( Greek Αρεόπολη ).
One of the three caves of Pyrgos Dirou (next to Glyfada and Alepotrypa ). The cave consists of two floors; the entrance is closed by a wall with loopholes. The aisle length is 700 meters with an area of 2700 m². The use of the cave has been documented from the Neolithic to this day; especially during the increase in piracy under Ottoman rule .
Katafiki Dryopidas
Location: Cyclades / Kythnos ; near 37 ° 22 '58 " N , 24 ° 25' 51" O at the location Dryopida ( Greek Δρυοπίδα ) near Fires ( Greek Φιρές ).
In contrast to the other Katafygi caves, the Katafiki Dryopidas is not a stalactite cave ; Speleothems (with the exception of a few sintered plumes) are completely absent. The visit by the Saxon geologist Karl Gustav Fiedler is considered the first scientific description of a cave in Greece.
The corridor length is 1200 meters. Part of the cave served as an iron ore mine from 1908 to 1939 and is set up as a show cave .
