from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cathedral of St. Daniel (Slov. Sv. Danijel) in the Slovenian city of Celje is the episcopal church of the Diocese of Celje . The church is the second building on this site and was built at the beginning of the 14th century as a monastery church of the monastery outside the city.

History and description

In the place of today's church there was already a small basilica in the 12th century . This was replaced by the current building in 1306 and served as the abbey church of the abbey on the edge of the medieval town. The ribbed vault was created from 1379 and the church was rebuilt several times until the 16th century. In 1413 the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows was added, which is presented in classical Gothic style . In 1420 the Freising Prince-Bishop Hermann von Cilli consecrated the church. There is also a wood-carved Pietà , which is the main treasure of the church.

During the Baroque period, the Franz Xaver Chapel, which was decorated with colorful frescoes, was attached to the Gothic church .

Architecture and equipment

The three-aisled nave has a flat ceiling and a nun's gallery . The ceilings of the nave and choir are frescoed from the 15th century, the latter of which are older. The Christ fragment in the middle of the choir even dates from the 14th century. Further frescoes show the three wise men .

The pulpit was painted by Michael Rosenberger , who restored it in 1851. During the restoration of 1858, the church received its current neo-Gothic appearance. Various tombstones from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period (15th to 17th centuries) adorn the exterior and interior walls of the church.

The 39th Bishop of Freising , Hermann von Cilli, who died in Cilli on December 13, 1421 as a result of an operation, was buried in the church. His tomb is now in the presbytery on the gospel page.

After the liturgical reform , the windows of the Chapel of Our Lady were replaced by modern stained glass windows.
