The Katzenbach is a 1.7 km long orographically left tributary of the Werre in East Westphalia-Lippe .
geography
The stream rises east of the Detmold district of Pivitsheide VH at 137 m above sea level. NN in the mixed forest area Schwarzenbrink . From its source, the stream flows north and feeds the artificially created post pond after about 900 m. After another 700 meters and crossing under the L 758, the stream flows northeast of Pivitsheide VH at Werre-kilometer 50.8 at 110 m above sea level. NN in the Werre . A few hundred meters to the west is the mouth of the Hasselbach , which runs parallel to the Katzenbach, into the Werre. Immediately north of the mouth of the Katzenbach is the Meschesee quarry pond . The Katzenbach runs along its entire length through partially moory mixed forest areas.
Post pond
The Postteich is an artificially created reservoir that is fed by the Katzenbach. It has an extension of 260 m in a west-east direction and 100 m in a north-south direction. The Postteich was planned in 1923 as the first and largest forest swimming pool in the Lippe region . The lake was created in a natural sandy depression through which the Katzenbach flowed and which had already been used for sand mining. After a year of construction, the bath could be opened. In addition, there was a restaurant on the lake, which is still operated today. At the end of the 1950s, swimming in the Postteich was prohibited for hygienic reasons and the Schwarzenbrink outdoor pool, the largest of the Detmold outdoor pools, was built to replace it. Due to the low water flow of the Katzenbach, which mostly dries up in summer, the water level of the Postteich is subject to large fluctuations. In the summer of 2009, the water level in the lake sank so much that for this reason and also due to the steep rise in water temperature, the fish living in the lake were threatened . A mission by the THW was necessary to save the endangered fauna of the lake. To this end, fresh water was first pumped into the Postteich from the Hasselbach, a few hundred meters away, using powerful pumps . Since this also did not have enough water, the water withdrawal from the Hasselbach was stopped and instead water was withdrawn from the Postteich and reintroduced in order to increase the greatly decreased oxygen content.
environment
The Katzenbach is assigned to the water quality class II – III. This means that the stream is critically polluted. The stream and its floodplain are part of the 59.5 hectare nature reserve "Hasselbach / Schwarzenbrink / Heidemoor am Kupferberg".
