The Keleti Canal ( Hungarian Keleti-főcsatorna , literally translated "Eastern Main Canal") is a 98 km long canal in Hungary .

The canal, built in 1956, is derived from the Tisza in the north and then flows back into the Tisza in the south via the Kálló Canal , Berettyó , Sebes-Körös and Körös . It runs near the cities of Debrecen , Balmazújváros and Hajdúszoboszló .

The canal is 25–30 m wide and max. 4.2 m deep. The banks are mostly bordered by a wide belt of reeds. They are used to irrigate the adjacent, very fertile fields.

The water from the canal is used to feed water pipes that were drawn across the fields for irrigation. Small trenches also run from the canals into the interior of the plain.

The canal also serves to divert the floods of the Tisza.

The water quality is very high, which is reflected in the species-rich fish population. In the main channel you can find pikeperch , rudd , amur , carp , perch , catfish and pike . The crayfish can be found here alongside the water turtle and a few other aquatic life.

In some parts of the canal there are open fish farms such as B. in Hajdúszoboszló. One of these fish farms is located on the road towards Nádudvar , approx. 2 km from the outskirts. You can also fish in the canal, provided you have the necessary fishing license.
