The Kettenbach is a brook that flows into the Aist from the left near Hohensteg (municipality of Tragwein ) in the Lower Mühlviertel in Upper Austria .

The stream has a catchment area of ​​58.2 square kilometers, which is mainly used for agriculture and forestry. In the Aist river system, the brook has the second largest sub-catchment area after the Feldaist and is the most built-up brook with 92 transverse structures.

Course, nature and tributaries

The Kettenbach rises west of Schönau at 710  m above sea level. A. and flows first south through forests and past extensive meadows and later on agricultural areas. Besides brown trout , Koppe and chub in the chain Bach also were brook lampreys found.

The banks are fortified through the local area of Bad Zell . In the further course the brook accompanies the Königswiesener Straße and is dammed at the Sonnmühle, whereby both the brook and the Mühlbach are partly routed underground through the sawmill area.

Together with the Hinterbach, the Kettenbach flows south towards Kriechbaum , where it turns west and in an arch south past Tragwein to the mouth. Further tributaries are the Weberbergerbach, the Hinterbach, the Pernbach, Hennbach and the Lungitzbach on the right and the Aubach and the Ellerbergerbach on the left.

The Kettenbach flows through the communities of Schönau im Mühlkreis , Bad Zell , Tragwein and Allerheiligen im Mühlkreis .

The sewage treatment plants of the cleanliness association Kettenbach dispose of the wastewater from the communities of Allerheiligen, Bad Zell and Tragwein and drain it into the Kettenbach.

A sawmill is operated in the Sonnmühle , which uses the hydropower of the Kettenbach and whose electricity supply is supported by a small power station in the Hinterbach.

In the Kriechbaum district, the Kettenbach flows through the KAMIG mining area , where kaolin is extracted.
