Khola (also Khola Alta ) is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Khola is the most populous place in the canton of Caracato in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Sapahaqui in the province of Loayza . The village of Khola is located at an altitude of 2090  m at the mouth of the Río Huacullani in the Río Luribay in the northern foothills of the Serranía de Sicasica .

geography

Khola lies between the Bolivian Altiplano in the west and the Amazon lowlands in the east. The region has a typical daytime climate in which the mean temperature differences between day and night are greater than the temperature differences between the seasons.

The mean average temperature of the region is around 17 ° C and fluctuates between 14 ° C in June / July and 19 ° C in November / December (see climate diagram Khola). Annual precipitation is 650 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to August, and monthly precipitation of more than 100 mm from December to February.

Transport network

Khola is located at a distance of 140 kilometers by road southeast of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz, the paved highway Ruta 1 leads south via El Alto to the south. About 50 kilometers south of El Alto, a road branches off to the southeast in Calamarca and follows the Río Cala Jahuira twenty kilometers upstream. From there a dirt road branches off to the east and after another 32 kilometers reaches Sapahaqui . The piste follows the course of the Río Sapahaqui to the village of Caracato and on the Río Caracato to the northeast to Khola .

Due to the historical population development in the municipality of Sapahaqui, the Aymara population is predominant, 96.7 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
